The culture
For those who want to unite the pleasures of taking a walk through nature with archeological interest, there's the possibility of going to the nearby nuraghic village of Tiscali, hidden in the heart of the mountain which carries the same name. The village was built, in order to be safely protected against roman invasion, inside an enormous doline of lush holm oak and terebith woods. Leaving Tiscali, on the side of Oliena, you will find the Su Gologone water springs, which are definitely worth a stop. In the neighboring territory of Thomes it is possible to visit the Giants' Tombs, a type of burial unique to the Mediterranean, that was used by the nuraghic people for their heroes and priests. These complex monuments were the object of a sort of pilgrimage, during which was practiced the archaic rite of incubation. Not far from Thomes is Serra Orrios, one of the best preserved archeological sites. It is a good example of a nuraghic village where it is still possible to appreciate diverse notable architectural elements. Upon returning from any of the inland excursions, you will be able to make a stop in Dorgali. Strolling through the center's streets you can purchase some ceramics from the local craftsmen or observe the weaving of carpets and the lacing of embroidery.
